Over the past decade, artists' residencies have been increasingly recognised as valuable and impactful programmes that help artists and creative professionals develop and sustain their practice, as highlighted in the EU’s Policy Handbook on Artists' Residencies. However, the term ‘residency’ encompasses a wide range of practices within the music sector – from short stays ahead of a festival to collaborative programmes like La Fabrique in Tunisia, to long-term initiatives such as the Safe Haven Incubator for Musicians: NYC, co-run by Artistic Freedom Initiative. This panel will explore the diverse models that exist to support musicians through residencies and share recommendations for hosts and participants, with particular attention to the needs of musicians at risk.
