In 1982, Sérgio Santos, a singer from Varginha, in southern Minas Gerais, performed in Milton Nascimento’s show Missa dos Quilombos. In 1991, he met poet Paulo César Pinheiro, who would become his main songwriting partner. Together, they composed over 300 songs, performed by artists such as Leila Pinheiro, MPB4, Alcione, João Nogueira, Mônica Salmaso, Olívia Hime, and Milton Nascimento. He also collaborated with Dori Caymmi, Francis Hime, Olívia Hime, Fernando Brant, Joyce, and André Mehmari.
Sérgio has recorded 10 albums featuring Dori Caymmi, Raphael Rabello, Mônica Salmaso, Leila Pinheiro, Joyce, Sivuca, and Francis Hime. In 2002, he won the Rival BR Award for Best Album of the Year with ÁFRICO, the first album of the 21st Century included in the Basic Discography of the Museum of Image and Sound. In 2009, his album LITORAL E INTERIOR was nominated for the 11th Latin Grammy. He has performed on major stages worldwide, including the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Herbst Theater in San Francisco, Blue Note in Tokyo, and UNESCO headquarters in Paris.
