The remarkable Portuguese singer Maria João, the virtuoso Brazilian pianist André Mehmari, and the renowned Portuguese double bassist Carlos Bica come together in an unprecedented and exciting collaboration that emerged at the invitation of the Theatro Circo in Braga. In this unmissable show, these three leading figures on the contemporary jazz scene present original compositions and reinterpretations of some of the most iconic jazz standards.
Maria João is a leading figure in improvised music, renowned for her iconic voice and intense performances. Awarded the Order of Infante D. Henrique, she is the only Portuguese artist to have been nominated for the European Jazz Prize. With a career spanning 40 years, she has worked with artists such as Bobo Stenson, Bobby McFerrin, and Gilberto Gil.
Nominated for the Latin Grammys, André Mehmari is one of the greatest exponents of creative Brazilian music. With more than 55 albums since 1998, his production covers jazz, opera, and orchestral music. He has performed in over 40 countries and worked with Milton Nascimento, Maria Bethânia, among others.
Carlos Bica is a reference in European jazz and leader of the AZUL trio. With several acclaimed projects, such as 11:11, voted Best National Jazz Album, he has collaborated with Ray Anderson, Kenny Wheeler, Carlos do Carmo, among others.
