Janet Azzouz de Angel – Bio

Janet Azzouz de Angel – singer, songwriter, producer, stage performer & businesswoman. She sang for the first time with a live band in the late ‘70’s at the age of ten (10) with the Belles Combo band at a talent show in her hometown of Mahaut, Dominica.

A couple years later, at the age of 15, she recorded her first single in creole with the band (Belles Combo) in Martinique. The hit single – ‘Ca c’est La Vie’ climbed the charts to No.1 in the French islands and Dominica. The Janet sang with various bands after that, then migrated to Toronto, Canada. In the ‘80’s in Toronto, she wrote and recorded ‘City Lights’ and ‘Nighthawks’ which played on local Toronto radio stations and provided some television interviews.

Janet returned to Dominica in the early ‘90’s to start a business and continued to perform whenever the opportunity arose. She returned to Toronto to record her Rock album – ‘What About Love’ in the late ‘90’s and released some of the tracks from the album. The title song ‘What about Love’ became an instant hit on local radio stations, going to the No. 1 spot. The rest of that album is available on the web.

In 2008 she recorded the album ‘Back on Track’ in Dominica with the title song: “Mind Your Business!”. The title track, done in rap style, was written by the artiste with a comical view of life on a small island. The album features the artiste’s own creation of her genre of music called ‘Caribbean Rock’.

Recently, Janet Azzouz made her contribution to the 2012 Cadence-lypso competition in Dominica with ‘Maman Zafans’ – a cadence-lypso creation, written and composed by one of her colleagues from the Belles Combo band. She placed 3rd. The song, sung in creole, was an instant hit with Dominicans at home and abroad, and went to No. 1 on the charts two weeks after release.

She has just released her first Christmas single in December 2012, called: The Christmas Medley. The medley of four Christmas carols has a bouncing back beat fit for dancing, and features the artiste rapping in between the songs, telling the Christmas story.

Janet Azzouz, like most Dominican artistes, is capable of performing a wide range of genres – Rock, Reggae, Dancehall, Calypso, Rap, Bouyon and Cadence/Zouk.

Being born on the island of Dominica where one is exposed to music from North America, Europe, Jamaica, Trinidad, and other Caribbean islands, Janet Azzouz, a Canadian/Dominican has a wealth of music to tap into. This fusion of genres has brought about her own style which she calls ‘Caribbean Rock’! In her own words: “The Caribbean Rocks”!

Janet Azzouz releases her music on her own label – Starr Productions and publishes on her own Starry Night Music publishing.
