That more and more classical music listeners and viewers are using music streaming services comes as no surprise. A January 12 article on the Bloomberg Business website reported Spotify has announced they now have more than 60 million active users, with 15 million paying subscribers, which underlines how mainstream (excuse the pun), streaming services have become. In addition to the services from Google Play, including You Tube, to Deezer, which offer many musical genres, several initiatives specifically focus on classical music, including, among others, DG Discovery, Composed (a partnership between Decca and Classic FM), Qobuz (which works with Gramophone magazine) and Naxos Music Library. Simultaneously, broadcasters and venues are entering the fray with their own streaming services.
This converging and highly-competitive distribution channel raises a number of challenges and issues for classical music stakeholders, from artists to listeners of recordings and live performance audiences, and all parties between, including concert venues, labels, broadcasters and physical distributors.
This session will explore some of these challenges and issues, including:
As broadband and mobile technology evolves, will classical consumers place greater emphasis on video rather than only audio?
Can a digital concert hall offering their artistic output co-exist with platforms offering larger ranges and multiple sources of repertoire?
Can broadcasters’ programming thrive in a world of individual and shared playlists?
