Antarctica is the last frontier, the coalface battleground for climate change, a vast extraordinary desert landscape.
As scientists work to decipher climates of our past and fathom our futures, an artists role is to help translate the science and turn it into a feeling, a visceral experience.
The chemistry is changing, the ice is melting, the peaks are eroding. The deafening quiet, the scale and the shattering beauty of the continent. It is this that I hope to capture, to film, to record, to immerse an audience is the mystery and daydream of this wilderness. An audio-visual immersive art installation and accompanying album that captures and embodies a unique part of our planet, Antarctica. Recordings including the natural soundscapes, capturing the light, the life, taking a measure of our planet in sound and vision from its most uninhabitable continent and sharing its vulnerability.
This work invites the audience to develop a new sense of wonder, awe and curiosity; to want to learn more about a continent that is the simplest place on earth – but is also the most dynamic and vulnerable to our human actions.
Recording natural and found soundscapes, reflecting on the desert terrain and addressing the continental vulnerability caused by escalating climate change, the audio-visual installation is an immersive art installation of films, song, spoken word and soundscapes, created on site in Antarctica in the Summer of 2023/24.
This work is designed to make humans stop, to contemplate, to feel uncomfortable, awestruck and experience the profound beauty simultaneously.
