Alterne is a newly formed trio that blends innovation and tradition in a unique ''dream folk'' style. Led by Danish composer and vocalist Ida Marie Jessen, the band explores life's many facets, such as doubt, longing, and joy, with crystal-clear vocals. Belgian violinist Oscar Beerten draws from Nordic folk traditions, playing both violin and hardanger-fiddle, while Estonian accordionist Maimu Jõgeda merges tradition and renewal with her charismatic performance.

This cross-pollination had its roots in Finland, where the three musicians from Denmark, Belgium and Estonia met as students at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. Finland thus provided an ideal creative frame for entering into musical dialogue, where they explored and build on each other’s musical intentions and ideas. All three musicians have a background in traditional and contemporary folk music, having immersed themselves in different styles of music and scenes from different corners of Europe. This wide range of musical vocabularies are emphasized in Alterne's music.

The music can be described as "Dream folk" and combines elements from folk, pop music and ambient. With original, self written songs with elements from traditional music from both Scandinavia and Central Europe are approached in a creative way, Alterne creates a musical portrait in which an innovative approach to folk music merges with tradition.

Their debut album ‘Alterne’, released on April 19, 2024 under the Danish label 'Go Danish Folk Music,' has been warmly received by audiences and critics alike. Following its release, the trio toured extensively with this album, performing in Belgium, Hungary, Germany, Finland, Denmark, and beyond. The album stands as a testament to their dedication and musical immersion, and it has found a special place in the hearts of listeners across Europe.
